One Text Or Call Could Wreck It All

National Enforcement Mobilization / April 5 – 12, 2021

Distracted driving is one of the fastest growing safety issues on the roads today. Distracted drivers aren’t just a threat to themselves: they’re a danger to everyone else on the road. The national distracted driving effort focuses on ways to change the behavior of drivers through legislation, enforcement, public awareness, and education.

Texting and driving is one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving.  At any given moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010.  Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on America’s roadways.

Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,142 lives in 2019 up from 2018, when there were 2,841 people killed and an estimated 400,000 injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.  Distracted drivers can run red lights and speed through school zones.

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

NHTSA leads the national effort to save lives by preventing this dangerous behavior. Get the facts, get involved, and help us keep America’s roads safe.
