October is Pedestrian Safety Month
Whether it be in a parking lot, crosswalk, or on a road, everyone is a pedestrian. In 2018, there were 6,283 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in the United States, which was a 3.4% increase from the 6,075 pedestrian fatalities in 2017. Pedestrian deaths accounted for 17% of all traffic fatalities in 2018. This equates to a traffic-related pedestrian death every 84 minutes.
To drive safely around pedestrians observe speed limits, and give pedestrians the right of way at crosswalks by stopping and allowing them to cross. In school zones, slow down to 20 mph. Also be attentive to the possibility that an unpredictable child may dart into the road at any time and so realize you must be prepared to stop at any time.
